Arthur de Sansal

Arthur de Sansal, Scipion Cochet 1855

Damask Perpetual / HP / Portland

Seedling of Géant des batailles

Arthur de Sansal was a rose breeder. He was married to the daughter of Jean Desprez, yes the father of the famous Desprez /Desprez à Fleurs jaunes

Not that popular as other Portlands and that's mainly due to reblooming power. While Portlands such as Mme Boll and Jacques Cartier bloom several times this Arthur de Sansal has only two main flushes: Early summer and end of summer. For those who don't mind they are in for a treat as the flowers of ADS are just gorgeous.

Dark red to mauve and purple, very full, old fashioned blooms standing on short stalks. They appear in small clusters of three or four. A short rose that will reach 100X100 cm or 3X3 feet. Extremely suitable for pots. The flowers exude a powerful Damask fragrance.
Very hardy zone 4b to 9b and the blooms don't burn that quickly in hot sun.

All in all a very beautiful heritage rose

Le Jardinier des roses

Le Jardinier des roses, Jérôme Rateau

Introduced by André Eve in 2017

Portland Hybrid

The generous gardener X Mme Boll

An extraordinary achievement this Le Jardinier des roses. A modern, new Portland is so exciting.
The rose has many features of her mother Mme Boll but also from her other Austin parent The generous gardener.
She's a bushy, typical Portland rose and can get 120X100 cm or 4X3 feet. Foliage is very Portland-ish. End of spring the buds appear in small clusters opening into gorgeous light pink full blooms. They remind us of Mme Boll yes but then they also look like Generous gardener. Strong Damask fragrance. In good Portland tradition this rose also repeats very good with at least three to four flushes. Health is excellent!
Zone 5b to 9b and also loves cooler sites. Very suited for pot culture.

A magnificent new addition to the Portland family. Available at André Eve nursery

Joasine Hanet

Joasine Hanet, Vibert 1846
Glendora
The cemetery rose
Glendora cemetery rose
Aunt Sally

Portland

Joasine Hanet was rediscovered on a cemetery in Glendora California. Although some disagree the ARS has accepted this rose as being Joasine Hanet. Today she's widely recognized as Joasine Hanet

It's a very unusual Portland because of her vigorous growth. She makes a big shrub of at least 150X150 cm and is Perpetual blooming. Her many flowers are deep pink with purple to violet shading. Often they have a button eye. Quartered bloom shape. The fragrance is considered as one of the strongest in the rose world. It's a very strong Damask /old rose fragrance

A very hardy Portland with Zone 5b to 10b.
Healthy but can suffer from rust.
Joasine Hanet or Glendora is the favorite rose of many well known rose breeders. Jérôme Chêne and his wife (owners of Loubert roses) are among them.

Rose de l'alhambra

Rose de l'alhambra, 2006

Sport of Rose de Rescht

Light pink sport of Rose de Rescht. Very beautiful. Same Characteristics as Rose de Rescht except color. In the pictures we see them both together.

Duchess of Portland

Duchess of Portland, before 1775

Damask Perpetual /Portland

Quatre Saisons X Rosa Gallica Officinalis??

Very beautiful semi double, light red blooms with golden stamen showing. After the main flush she reblooms in Autumn. Sets hips. 90X120 cm or 3X4 feet. Zone 4b to 9b. Very healthy. Strong Damask fragrance

Rose Rose de Rescht

Rose Rose de Rescht, 1900

Damask Perpetual /Portland

Found rose

Dark pink to red, rosette shaped blooms. Flushes freely throughout the season. Strong Damask fragrance. Neat, rounded bush 120X100 cm or 5X4 feet. Zone 4b to 9b. Good for northern Sweden, shade tolerant. A very popular, continously blooming Portland. Recommended

Jacques Cartier /Marquise Boccella

Jacques Cartier /Marquise Boccella, Desprez 1842? Moureau Robert 1862 ?

Damask Perpetual /Portland

There's a lot of confusion about this rose. In America Jacques Cartier must be sold as Marchesa Boccella but that name is wrong as the right name is Marquise Boccella. In Europe we shake our heads and call it Jacques Cartier lol 😂
Beautiful pink blooms, rosette shape in clusters. Strong fragrance. Makes a rounded shrub of 150 X 90 cm or 5X3 feet. Looks a lot like Mme Boll but Mme Boll's blooms are more refined and almost always perfect. Cartier is a bit more rough.
Good reblooming skills (three times) and very healthy. A good rose. A white sport exists and is sold as White Jacques Cartier. Les roses de Daniel in Malmedy in Belgium sells a climbing sport of Jacques Cartier.

Rose du roi

Rose du roi, 1812

Damask Perpetual / Portland

Crimson to purple very double blooms with a strong fragrance. Rather flamboyant growth 120X90 cm or 4X3 feet. Some scattered blooms later in the season. Zone 4b to 9b.

Mme Boll (Comte de Chambord)

Mme Boll aka Comte de Chambord, Boll/Boyeau 1858

Portland

Mme Boll is the most beautiful Portland rose with perfect light to deeper pink Damask style blooms. Very full and with a strong Damask fragrance. A beautiful rounded shrub 120X100 cm or 5X4 feet.
Can rebloom several times so deadheading is really necessary. Healthy and very hardy zone 3b to 9b. Ideal for borders, pots, hedge or standard rose.
Hates a hot position. Highly recommended rose

The rose Comte de Chambord from Moureau Robert has been lost and 99% of the rosarians agree that the rose being sold as Comte de Chambord is in fact Mme Boll so they are identical.

Shade tolerant? No
Tolerant to heat? No, loves cool dry weather
Resistant to Blackspot? Yes
Resistant to mildew? Yes
Resistant to rain? Moderate
Use: Border, pots

One of our most treasured old garden roses. Mme Boll is your ideal companion in summer. The absolute reblooming champion, up to four or five times. Magnificent fragrant flowers. Together with Mme Isaac Pereire en Paul Neyron Mme Boll is ideal to make rose jam
She's in her element in a large pot in full sun.
In the past this rose was sold as Comte de Chambord but the real Comte de Chambord rose (Moreaux/Robert) has been lost. So in rose circles the consensus is that Comte de chambord doesn't exist anymore and that the rose being sold as Comte de chambord is Mme Boll. But many people use the old name but it's time to call this beauty Mme Boll.
