Orfeo

Orfeo, Jan Leenders 1963

Climbing HT, red large flowered climber

Curly pink X Guinée

A climber that needs much more attention. There is only one handful of deep red, very fragrant climbers and it's a shame that Orfeo is often completely forgotten

Orfeo has the best genes; Curly pink had Crimson glory as a parent and Guinée is Arguably the most magnificent red climber but a bit sensitive to cold winters. The outcome of the cross couldn't be better.

Large, very double, red to deep red flowers with a very strong Damask fragrance. Climbs up to 4 meters or 13 feet and is suitable for pergola's, trellis, obelisks, walls etc...
Healthy is extremely good and she's much more Hardy than Guinée. Zone 6b to 9b
Reblooms in flushes throughout the season

Rather difficult to find in Europe, easier in the USA. In Europe a Danish nursery sells her but she was already sold out this season. Try to get her!

Captain Christy climbing

Captain Christy climbing, Ducher 1882

Climbing Hybrid Tea

Sport of Captain Christy

Looking more like a Bourbon, Captain Christy is a stunning rose. She's even more beautiful as a climber so it was good this sport was found by Veuve Ducher.

Big, pale, flesh pink, very full blooms borne mostly solitary in small clusters. They exude a strong Tea rose fragrance. If you didn't know better you would think it is a Bourbon or Hybrid Perpetual but no, it's really a Hybrid Tea.
The big light green foliage is reasonably healthy. The climbing version can reach up to 4 meters or 12 feet. Heat and shade tolerant but with these big full blooms she doesn't like the rain. They don't ball but the petals get brown during long periods of rain.
Extremely beautiful as an Obelisk rose or on a pillar. The rose blooms in flushes throughout the season.
Often forgotten but during warm dry summers this rose is stunning! Zone 6b to 9b

King of Siam

King of Siam, Brauër 1912

Climbing Hybrid Tea

Mme Victor Verdier X Safrano

A magnificent climber that needs much more attention. There's a lot of confusion concerning this rose as it is always sold as the old climbing Tea "Roi de Siam" from Laffay. But the rose from Laffay was already lost and extinct by 1850. So when you order Roi de Siam you'll always get King of Siam from Brauër.
It's a vigorous climbing HT and can reach 2,5 to 3,5 meters or 11 to 14 feet.
The parents are extremely well known and are rose royalty. Mme Victor Verdier is a beautiful Hybrid Perpetual with strong fragrance and Safrano doesn't need introduction anymore as this Tea is the parent of hundreds of magnificent roses.
It was written in the stars that King of Siam would be a very beautiful rose.
The big buds open into these very large cherry 🍒 pink HT blooms. They have a very strong fruity fragrance. The blooms are held upright on strong stems so absolutely no flopping over or nodding heads.
The rose repeats well and can be trained against a trellis, a fence, an arch or large obelisk.
Zone 6b to 10b
A wonderful rose

Mme Grégoire Staechelin

Mme Grégoire Staechelin, Dot 1926

Climbing HT

Frau Karl Drushki X Château de Clos Vougeot

One of the great treasures of our rose heritage this Mme Grégoire Staechelin. Very big, loose, cyclamen pink flowers with a strong fragrance. A giant climber that can reach more than 6 meters or 18 feet. Overwhelming late spring blooming with some scattered blooms later in the season. Very healthy foliage and Hardy zone 6b and higher. An old aristocrat from bygone times but 1000% worth to be grown today

Mrs Herbert Stevens climbing

Mrs Herbert Stevens climbing, Pernet Ducher 1922

Climbing Hybrid Tea

Sport of Mrs Herbert Stevens

One of the best white climbing Hybrid teas. Looks a lot like the best white HT Paul's Lemon pillar but that one has a lime green shading in the center and has more fragrance.
Mrs Herbert Stevens climbing is a tall growing rose and can reach six meters or 18 feet. Her flowers are double, loosely filled in a pristine white color. They have a strong fresh tea scent. Flushes freely throughout the season. Little disease and zone 6b to 9b. A romantic, Virgin like Climber. Recommended!

Ena Harkness climbing

Ena Harkness climbing, 1954

Climbing Hybrid Tea

Sport of Ena Harkness

Ena Harkness, another red Hybrid Tea monument of the previous century. Ena has fantastic bright red blooms with that fabulous Damask fragrance. She reblooms and is rain tolerant. Ena however had one flaw: She suffered from the weak neck syndrome. This means that the big blooms hang down and nod at you as if they bow before us. Fortunately this "flaw" became an advantage when her climbing sport was discovered in 1954. Now she could climb up to 450 cm or 14 feet and the nodding blooms would look at us. Problem solved!
I even want to say that an Ena without weak neck isn't Ena anymore, it's such a part of her personality. Zone 6b to 9b. All red Hybrid Teas from mid 20th century are susceptible to Blackspot but this doesn't mean that they always gonna get it. Probably more not than yes. In rainy summers even the best roses would struggle with not attracting blackspot.
So if you're looking for a red climbing monument with exquisite fragrant blooms and a charming weak neck? Ena is your thing!

Papa Meilland climbing

Papa Meilland climbing, 1970

Climbing sport of Papa Meilland

Climbing Hybrid Tea

Papa Meilland was one of the most popular roses in the second half of the 20th century. With its perfect HT shaped flowers, the stunning deep red color and a pervasive delicious Damask fragrance it was the nr 1 rose for so many. But Papa was susceptible to Blackspot, as so many of the red modern roses and Hybrid Teas in general. Still, many want Papa in their garden today as it certainly doesn't always gets blackspot and it's pros outweigh the cons.
As with all Hybrid Teas it wouldn't take long before a climbing sport was discovered and it occurred in 1970 in Australia. The climbing sport can reach 350 cm or 11 feet and flushes throughout the season. Don't expect hundreds of blooms opening at once, Hybrid Tea climbers have less flowers but they are bigger with much more fragrance. With climbing Hybrid teas it's the quality of the blooms that counts. So Papa climbing will get flushes freely but not abundant. The blooms are identical to the bush form so beautiful dark red and a heavenly fragrance. She's less susceptible to Blackspot than her parent plant. She loves full sun and has zone 6b to 9b.
Very good as cut flower.
