Olde Romeo

Olde Romeo, Harvey Davidson 1994

Hybrid Tea

Dark red, old fashioned blooms with a strong fragrance. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Olde Romeo is a very disease resistant red HT and that's rather difficult to find. Can easily compete with Papa Meilland, Chrysler imperial, Mr Lincoln and Oklahoma but is much more healthy.
120 cm or 4 feet, zone 6b to 9b

It seems that Olde Romeo is about to become very difficult to find as most nurseries don't want to sell it anymore. So if you have this rose and you want to keep it for the future you should take cuttings.

Mrs Oakley Fisher

Mrs Oakley Fisher, Cant 1921

Single flowered Hybrid Tea

Unknown parentage

Together with Dainty bess Mrs Oakley Fisher shares the honor of being the most beautiful single petalled Hybrid Tea. One might say unique because that's what they are.

Starting light orange, the petals quickly turn buttery and Sulphury yellow showing their orange stamen. They come in small clusters on an upwards growing, rounded shrub. She can reach 100X100 cm or 3X3 feet, maybe a bit more. She doesn't flip or flop over. The flowers have an unusual strong fresh tea fragrance. Pollinators love the flowers. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Disease resistant and rain proof. Prefers full sun. Zone 7b to 10b. New growth is Reddish. Probably China ancestors...

A magnificent recommended rose

Jardins de Bagatelle

Jardins de Bagatelle, Meilland before 1986

HT, Grandiflora

Seed: Queen Elizabeth X Elegie
Pollen: Laura 81

Meilland knows how to create the most perfect shaped HT buds and flowers. Combined with good growth and an exquisite fragrance its rather strange this rose isn't more grown

Cream with pink or yellow shading, very double, typical HT blooms. They stand in small clusters on strong upright stems. The rose can reach 120X70 cm or 4X3 feet. The blooms are highly fragrant with lemon and Damask
Blooms freely all summer long

Zone 4b to 11b. She's praised a lot on different fora and sites and it remains a mystery why she isn't grown more widely

Paul Shirville

Paul Shirville, Harkness 1980

Hybrid Tea

Compassion X Mischief

An extremely popular rose till the end of the nineties but now almost forgotten. Harkness created so many good Hybrid Teas and Paul Shirville is one of them.

It's the kind of rose bud and bloom shape people loved back then. Unfortunately so many modern HT's fell completely flat when they were fully opened which looked very sloppy. It's the reason why I hated HT's in the beginning.

Paul Shirville however kept his shape when fully open. The high centered peach 🍑 salmon pink buds unfold in perfect HT tradition into peach 🍑 pink big flowers. They inherited the strong sweet fragrance from Compassion. They stand alone on one branch or in small clusters.
Growth is not tall but rather bushy, 100X80 cm or 3X3 feet. Zone 6b to 9b
Paul Shirville is susceptible to Blackspot so maybe not recommended in rainy areas.

Reblooming is very good as all Harkness roses except for Margaret Merrill

Although Paul Shirville has compassion as a parent the blooms and buds are of just a bit less quality compared to Compassion itself. It is however a good reliable rose that will give you a bunch of big fragrant flowers
