Veilchenblau

Veilchenblau, Schmidt, Germany 1909

Multiflora rambler

Seedling of Crimson rambler

One of the most well-known ramblers because of its multitude of small, semi double mauve flowers. Of course they are not blue but with some imagination it comes close. Nevertheless it's a very beautiful sight when in full bloom and rather unusual.

The little flowers stand in medium clusters and have a mild apple to Lilly of the valley fragrance.
Growth is vigorous with lots of twiggy canes and shoots. Rather easy to train this rambler can reach 7 meters or 21 feet. At its very best when it can cover a gazebo or small roof. So when it can grow horizontally covering a large structure it will reward you with quit a show. Of course you can also use it for pergola's, arches etc...

Veilchenblau can suffer from mildew when the spot is too windy are au contraire not windy enough. It's an old feature of many Multiflora Ramblers to be rather susceptible to mildew. Dorothy Perkins and Excelsa had it so bad they got replaced by mildew free clones. Super Dorothy and Super Excelsa replaced the old ones. They are an improved version.

A very hardy zone 5b to 9b rambler that can take shade.

If you love mauve in great quantities? This is the one for you!

Olivet

Olivet, Alcide Vigneron 1892

Multiflora rambler, Large flowered rambler

De la Grifferaie X Madame Baron Veillard

An insanely beautiful rambler this Olivet but sadly only known in France and that's ridiculous.

Very large, quartered, pink blooms in small clusters. Strong old rose fragrance. Blooms very abundant in early summer with scattered blooms later in the season.

A vigorous rambler with flexible growth so training is rather easy. Can reach 5 meters or 18 feet. Ideal for trellis, fences, big Obelisks etc...
Reliable, healthy and zone 6b to 10b

A rose that needs much more attention!

Peggy Martin

Peggy Martin, discovered by Peggy Martin in 1989

Found rose, reblooming rambler

A rose of great American interest. This rose survived two weeks underwater after hurricane 🌀 Katrina smashed into New Orleans and Louisiana in 2005. A rose that can survive that long in salty seawater is almost indestructible. She got nationwide attention and became a symbol of resilience.

The plant itself came from cuttings and these cuttings came other cuttings etc....
Probably it's a seedling from a know variety...

Flowers are semi double to double, pink and stand in clusters. Fragrance can go from mild to moderate but opinions vary. As a rambler this rose can easily reach 7 meters or 21 feet. She repeats in September.

Extraordinary healthy and thornless this rose is an addition to each southern state garden. Very hardy too with Zone 4b to 10b. Suitable to climb and cover anything you want.

After her exposure in the media she became a rose monument and cuttings of the rose got send to nearly all American rose nurseries. Today she's everywhere in New Orleans, Louisiana and beyond.

Isn't that a great story?

Lykkefund

Lykkefund is a once blooming rambler from Danish rose breeder Aksel Olsen. On the market since 1930 Lykkefund is regarded as a must have rose in Scandinavia if you have a rose garden. The rose was a found seedling at Olsen nursery and there has been lots of speculation about the parentage. Olsen himself said it was R. Helenae X Zepherine Drouhin so....
Lykkefund is a very vigorous rambler, very tough and Hardy. In a few years she can already reach up to 5 meters or 18 feet. In late spring the plant is smothered with clusters of single white flowers. In the beginning they have this extraordinary egg yolk colored heart, made up by her stamen. Very pretty. Fragrance is very strong and airborne because with this rose it's the Pollen which is fragrant and not the base of the petals. In full flush on a warm day her scent is everywhere. In autumn beautiful hips appear.

Lykkefund is also thornless which is rare for a rambler of this size. Her foliage and shoots are Wisteria like. She can take considerable shade and will grow and bloom in harsh conditions. Suitable for all kinds of climbing purposes but remember it's a big rose.
Hardy 5b to 9b. Bumblebees adore her !

Thalia is a grand Multiflora rambler with countless clusters of white to cream semi single blooms with a moderate fragrance. It's an impressive sight when in full bloom. The golden stamen are prominent and they attract lots of pollinators

Not the tallest rambler but with 350X250 cm or 10X7 feet she will cover arches, pergola's, pillars, Obelisks etc..
Jubilé Loubert was discovered by Loubert and used to commemorate their jubileum. It's identical to Thalia but the petals are light pink

Zone 6b to 9b, rain tolerant
