Blairii No 1

Blairii No 1, Blair 1830

Climbing Bourbon

Park's Yellow tea scented China X unknown

The older and lesser known sister of Blairii No 2 but maybe even more beautiful. Flowers are big and very rounded at first in this cream, flesh pink color. When they open more we get this very puffy, baroque flower which is a bit darker pink in the center. The fragrance is powerful and typically Bourbon.

The biggest difference between No 1 and No 2 is that No 1 does rebloom in flushes. No 2 only has one main flush and her blooms are less full and have more pink to almost violet towards the center.

Blairii No 1 gets up to 350 cm or 11 feet. Ideal for a fence, obelisk, trellis etc...
Zone 6b to 9b. Rain tolerant

It's a rather difficult rose to find but if you are able to buy her you certainly should.

St Ethelburga

St Ethelburga, Amanda Beales 2003

Modern Hybrid

Mme Boll (Comte de Chambord) X Aloha

Sometimes a modern rose appears that will take your breath away. St Ethelburga is such a rose. With these parents you know that the result will be spectacular.

Forget the David Austin roses of the past 15 years and look at St Ethelburga. The most beautiful soft pink, very full, old fashioned blooms in small clusters. A very strong delicious clove fragrance is present. Perfect height, 120X100 cm or 4X3 feet, a bit taller as a small climber against a trellis or fence. Continues blooming throughout the season and very good health. It's quite sad that this rose isn't available in the EU but she is in the USA and in the UK of course. Maybe we'll see her appearing in the future. Zone 5b to 9b

Her ancestors include: Baronne Prevost, New Dawn, Safrano, Dr W van fleet and Souvenir de Président Carnot

Russeliana

Russeliana, unknown, before 1826

Hybrid Multiflora

Parentage unknown

A rather gorgeous Multiflora rambler with violet/lilac/purple very full blooms in small clusters. Strong fragrance. A vigorous and healthy rose with many purposes. Can be used as a rambler, a big shrub etc..
As a rambler she can reach 6 meters or 18 feet. Only once blooming. Zone 4b to 9b, rain and shade tolerant.
The Geschwind's rose "Himmelsauge" in commerce is actually also Russeliana

Russeliana has this Rather Gallica feel and in full flush it looks absolutely stunning.

Lactic Acid Bacteria

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are significant groups of probiotic organisms in fermented food. LAB regulate soil organic matter and the biochemical cycle, detoxify hazardous chemicals, and enhance plant health. They are found in decomposing plants, traditional fermented milk products, and normal human gastrointestinal and vaginal flora. LAB strains are considered promising candidates for sustainable agriculture, and they promote soil health and fertility. Therefore, they have received much attention regarding sustainable agriculture. LAB metabolites promote plant growth and stimulate shoot and root growth. As fertilizers, LAB can promote biodegradation, accelerate the soil organic content, and produce organic acid and bacteriocin metabolites.

For our roses this means that regularly spraying them and our soil with LAB will increase their resistance against diseases, will turn our organic matter much faster into humus, will decrease the use of fertilizers and make our plants much more drought resistant. It is a natural antidote to ammonia and toxic bacteria in the soil. It will destroy them at impact. Sprayed on compost heaps it will accelerate the decomposing process so it's much quicker ready to use and it eliminates bad odors.
Even in our ponds it's very useful as LAB attack algae, ammonia and nitrite.

It's not surprising that LAB are getting so much attention from governments and scientists. It will become a major ally in sustainable, organic agriculture.

We, as gardeners can buy LAB online and the only thing we need to do is dilute the right amount of LAB serum with water and give this to our roses and our soil. Very helpful is the fact that it works best on a wet soil or during rain. The bacteria spread immediately in a damp and wet soil. So spray the solution on the top of your soil and onto the leaves of roses and perennials. If there's no rain predicted you must first wet the soil with the garden hose and immediately spray with the LAB.
In Belgium and the Netherlands the best product to buy is Microferm. The reviews are the product's best promoter
Look online for LAB if you don't live in Belgium or the Netherlands. It's available in Europe, USA, Australia etc...

Madame Abel Chatenay

Madame Abel Chatenay, Pernet Ducher 1895

Early Hybrid Tea

Dr Grill X Victor Verdier

A gem from the past this Madame Abel Chatenay. Exquisite light pink, typical Tea shaped flowers emerging all summer long. The flowers have a coppery yellow shine in full sun. They are moderately to strongly fragrant. Together with La France, Mme Caroline Testout and lady Mary Fitzwilliam Madame Abel Chatenay is regarded as one of the most beautiful light pink early HT's.
100X100 cm or 3X3 feet, maybe a bit more. Health is very reasonable as is her rain resistance. She can however get some mildew but that's easily fixed with the milk treatment.
Zone 7b to 10b
A climbing sport is available which is also very beautiful but difficult to find.

Orfeo

Orfeo, Jan Leenders 1963

Climbing HT, red large flowered climber

Curly pink X Guinée

A climber that needs much more attention. There is only one handful of deep red, very fragrant climbers and it's a shame that Orfeo is often completely forgotten

Orfeo has the best genes; Curly pink had Crimson glory as a parent and Guinée is Arguably the most magnificent red climber but a bit sensitive to cold winters. The outcome of the cross couldn't be better.

Large, very double, red to deep red flowers with a very strong Damask fragrance. Climbs up to 4 meters or 13 feet and is suitable for pergola's, trellis, obelisks, walls etc...
Healthy is extremely good and she's much more Hardy than Guinée. Zone 6b to 9b
Reblooms in flushes throughout the season

Rather difficult to find in Europe, easier in the USA. In Europe a Danish nursery sells her but she was already sold out this season. Try to get her!

Mrs Oakley Fisher

Mrs Oakley Fisher, Cant 1921

Single flowered Hybrid Tea

Unknown parentage

Together with Dainty bess Mrs Oakley Fisher shares the honor of being the most beautiful single petalled Hybrid Tea. One might say unique because that's what they are.

Starting light orange, the petals quickly turn buttery and Sulphury yellow showing their orange stamen. They come in small clusters on an upwards growing, rounded shrub. She can reach 100X100 cm or 3X3 feet, maybe a bit more. She doesn't flip or flop over. The flowers have an unusual strong fresh tea fragrance. Pollinators love the flowers. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Disease resistant and rain proof. Prefers full sun. Zone 7b to 10b. New growth is Reddish. Probably China ancestors...

A magnificent recommended rose
