Geoff Hamilton, Austin 1997
English rose
People of my age (49) and older who watched Gardeners' World will definitely remember the late Geoff Hamilton. Geoff presented the gardening series for years and wrote many books on gardening. Geoff suddenly died of a second heart attack in 1996.
He was a good friend of David Austin senior and David wanted to honor his friend by creating a rose named Geoff Hamilton.
Geoff Hamilton is a somewhat forgotten David Austin rose and that's a shame really because it has the most typical blooms of all Austins.
It's a big shrub and can reach 150 cm or more so can be used as a pillar rose or for fences.
The glorious flowers appear in clusters and are globular rounded cups with many petals inside. A most charming effect. They exude a strong old rose fragrance. Reblooming is good and the rose is praised for it.
Again, the Austin classic Heritage was a parent.
I want to see this rose grown more widely. She deserves it and Geoffs legacy will be safe.
