Velouté d'Orléans

Velouté d'Orléans, Dauvesse 1852

Bourbon /early Hybrid Perpetual

Once almost forgotten but she's emerging from the misty soup of rose oblivion.
Velouté d'Orléans deserves much more attention and can be compared with Bourbon queen, Coup d'Hebé, Mme Isaac Pereire etc...
Maybe not as tall as her more famous sisters but this rose still reaches 150X120 cm or 5X4 feet. Put a small obelisk or tripod over her and she will form a big beautiful shrub.
Blooms are big, very double and almost shaggy in this Mauve/pink color. Sometimes the petals have white stripes which adds to their beauty. Of course, as a Bourbon this rose is supposed to have a strong fragrance and yes Velouté d'Orléans delivers as her scent is captivating. Zone 5b to 9b. Can suffer from some mildew but nothing serious. After the main flush she flushes sporadically well into autumn. Available in the better Heritage rose nurseries
