Maebara's dream

Maebara's dream, Viru and Girija Viraraghavan 2013

Hybrid Gigantea

Carmoisine X R. Gigantea

In Europe we have few R. Gigantea hybrids as they require a more mild climate but they can be grown in zone 7b and higher. We have the astonishing Belle Portugais and Sénateur Lafolette to name a few.
Rosa Gigantea is an Asian rose growing in parts of India, China and the Himalayas. It's an extremely vigorous rose as she can climb up to 15 meters or more (45 feet) into trees. She's the equal of our Kiftsgate. She blooms with giant Single white blooms showing their stamen. The flowers can be 17 cm or 6" in diameter. They exude a distinct fragrance. This giant rose in full flush is a sight to behold for sure. She's called the Asian Queen of wild roses.
Until a few decades ago very few rose breeders tried to cross with R. Gigantea. We had to do it with the old ones we know.
That was until Viru and Girija Viraraghavan started a breeding program using Gigantea. You would be absolutely stupid if you don't use the immens potential of R. Gigantea.
Maebara's dream is a result of such a cross with R. Gigantea. It's a triumph all the way. This Hybrid Gigantea has perfect Tea shaped buds and blooms! Imagine a giant Kiftsgate rose with flowers like Safrano or Madame Falcot but only bigger! Well that's just how Maebara's dream looks. Apricot or apricot blend semi double blooms with a strong fragrance. In one word: Majestic!
Can be grown on a pergola, large obelisk, arch, trellis and even trees. Zone 7b to 10b. Extremely disease resistant and heat and rain tolerant.
