We all know that good old fashioned red roses are quite rare. David Austin burned his fingers time and time again on red English roses. The Knight, The Squire, Othello, The Prince, Prospero, William Shakespeare, William Shakespeare 2000, Falstaff etc...
All of these roses didn't perform as they were expected and today they are almost forgotten. Some, like Munstead Wood, are very recent so we can't judge this one yet.
Meilland is the best known European breeder in the USA and many of their roses are available in the USA. As we all know the US have many climate zones and micro climates so a rose has to be really good to get popular over there. There's a reason why knock out roses are popular in The States.
My friends in the US repeatedly told me about Rouge Royal rose and how exceptionally good she was. It was only later I found out it was Alain Souchon from Meilland.
What makes this rose so good? Well.. It's heat resistant, it's rain resistant, it's very Hardy, it has a very strong raspberry fragrance and it's strong canes can support the big flowers even when wet.
At Helpmefind she's a very popular rose and again especially in the USA. Some comment that it outclassed every single DA rose they had.
I myself have never grown this rose but because so many of our members live in the USA it's only logical and appropriate to review this rose.
The blooms are deep red and quartered, a bit like The Prince or Falstaff. They have a very strong raspberry fragrance. The bush repeats quite well and can reach 120 cm. It's very suitable for pots.

Dirk's opinion:
I definitely would give this rose a try. So many people can't be wrong?
