L. D. Braithwaite

L. D. Braithwaite, Austin 1988

English rose

For me it's been always a mystery why David Austin nurseries ditched this rose in Europe. In my opinion it's the best red English rose to date. Bright Crimson red, very full, big, puffy blooms on very strong canes. The color is to die for.
The parents of this rose were Mary Rose X The Squire and L. D inherited the shrub style from Mary rose and the exceptional color from The Squire. No flopping here, strong upright canes which can withstand a hurricane. Again a Hybrid Tea kind of shrub and that's why she's so strong. They have a moderate to strong old rose fragrance. Blooms last long and don't fade. Repeats well throughout the season and is very healthy for an Austin variety. This bloom can withstand rain as well. A nice rounded shrub 120X100 cm or 5X4 feet.
Negative points? Mmm let me think? People who don't love the Hybrid Tea growth?
Let's not call ourselves fools, this is the best red rose Austin Nurseries has ever created. If you can get hold of her, buy two or three. Beautiful in the border or in pots and even more beautiful as a standard rose.
Recommended variety!
