Jude the obscure, Austin 1989
English rose
Jude the obscure is by far the most fragrant of all David Austin roses but it comes at a price.
Globular chalice like apricot blooms alone or in clusters appear on sturdy strong canes which can reach 120 cm. The fragrance is almost too powerful and is intensely fruity, tropical fruity.
The problem with Jude the obscure is that it needs a lot of sun, no rain and hot temperatures. She also needs time to become a beautiful plant. She's rather susceptible to rust and blackspot but only in wet conditions.
Austin stopped selling this rose in Europe so it's retired but it's patent ended in 2017 so everybody is free to sell this variety. Jude is a star in California and Southern Australia like New South Wales.
Maybe Jude will appreciate western European weather more now climate change is really hitting us hard.
In the best conditions this is the most beautiful Austin rose ever created.
My favourite DA rose, grows well for me in Adelaide, South Australia. I just love the scent. Jude loves our hot summers.
