Geschwind's schönste

Geschwind's schönste, Geschwind circa 1900

Hybrid Multiflora

Normally Multiflora hybrids have rather small flowers in clusters but Geschwind's schönste shows us it doesn't have to be.

Geschwind's schönste (Geschwind's most beautiful) is a vigorous big shrub or rambler which can reach 400 cm or 12 feet. The medium sized magnificent carmine pink with magenta shading old fashioned blooms stand in clusters. In full flush the rose is covered with them. The exceptionally beautiful color makes a true stand in a more natural garden. Once blooming but for several weeks, mild fragrance.

Geschwind's schönste is most beautiful when she can cascade or tumble down from an Obelisk, an umbrella support, a pergola or growing in large shrubs or small trees.
Again this rose is very hardy zone 4b to 9b, shade and rain tolerant.
So here are some of the Geschwind roses you must have: Gruß an Teplitz, Gipsy boy, Erinnerung an Brod, Geschwind's orden, Geschwind's schönste and Aurelia Liffa

Hybrid Multiflora

R. Rugosa X R. Multiflora X R. Rugosa Alba

Only now we are beginning to appreciate the enormous work of Austrian Hungarian rose breeder Rudolph Geschwind. His Crossings with species roses wasn't really noticed at the time but today they certainly are.

Geschwind's orden is such a creation which is becoming more and more popular. It's a Multiflora rambler of approx 500 cm or 18 feet and is ideal for pergola's, obelisks, fences and even trees.
Flowers are of a rare beauty: Very full, old fashioned blooms in small clusters. But it's the magnificent color scheme of the petals which is breathtakingly beautiful: Outer white petals, deep pink in the center and in between a mauve shading. The result is just gorgeous.
This rambler blooms for several weeks and is the summum of romanticism. Extremely Hardy this rose can survive 4b to 9b. Rain and shade tolerant. Maybe one downside: Lack of smell but you get so much in return.
Look at her!

Rosette Delizy

Rosette Delizy, Paul Nabonnand 1921

Tea

Général Galliéni X Comtesse de Bardi

Some people think that bi colored roses are only found in modern roses but that's definitely not true. Especially the Teas have some varieties in their ranks with beautiful exquisite bi colors.

Rosette Delizy from Paul Nabonnand is such a stunning rose. Still highly popular in more warm and dry climates this rose is of a breathtaking beauty. But don't let that put you off, she thrives in zone 7b to 11b
Rosette is a typical bushy Tea and can reach 130X100 cm or 5 X 3 feet. New growth is bronze red and nearly thornless.
From the buds emerge yellow - carmine pink outer petals with apricot carmine highlights. A good tea fragrance is clearly detectable. The beautiful flowers are borne solitary or in small clusters. The shrub blooms very freely throughout the season. As with all Teas Rosette Delizy thrives in hot dry weather but the colors are most intense in cooler weather. She doesn't like shade but she is rain tolerant.

One of the most beautiful creations of Paul Nabonnand

Souvenir du président Carnot

Early Hybrid Tea

Unknown X Lady Mary Fitzwilliam

Once this rose was extremely popular as a good florist rose and strong fragrance but slowly she got out of fashion and was almost forgotten. Today, rose lovers want to know their rose heritage and inevitably they will come across Souvenir du président Carnot. She was a parent of one of the most important ramblers of the 20th century: Dr W. Van Fleet and so automatically also a Parent of Van Fleet's sport New Dawn.

The color is seashell pink with blush pink edges. The very high centered buds unfold in this perfect HT shape, the one we all love. They have a good strong fragrance.
Growth is bushy and not tall, let's say approx 90X70 cm or 3X3 feet. Zone 6b to 9b. The blooms are rain tolerant but demand full sun.
Very beautiful in borders, as a cut flower and in pots.
She can be found in good nurseries.

Rose Bellard

Gallica

We don't know who the creator was of this rose and she's rather rare but boy does she have beautiful flowers and her fragrance is of the most powerful of all Gallica's.

Medium sized, light pink rosettes with darker shading in the center. They stand in clusters. Her key feature is the green button eye which makes her even more elegant and with this she's in good Mme Hardy company. The fragrance is overpowering and the best of all Gallica's. She blooms for six weeks depending on the temperature.

Growth is slender and bushy with the typical coarse green foliage of the Gallica family. She can reach 130X100 cm or 4X3 feet. If she's pruned at one height in autumn she'll become more dense and rounded but best not to prune the first three years as with all old roses.
Very hardy with zone 4b to 10b so she's suitable for the more colder regions in America and Scandinavia. She can take partial shade and the blooms are rain tolerant as long as it doesn't last for days.

A beautiful, mysterious gem which should be grown more often.
