Sombreuil

Sombreuil, unknown 1940

Large flowered climber

Modern Hybrid

This astounding beauty looks as if she's one of the gems of the 19th century but surprisingly she was discovered in 1940.
Sombreuil has large, flat, rosette shaped blooms in a cream to white color, sometimes with a light yellow shading in the center. They usually stand in clusters on a healthy and vigorous plant which can reach 400 cm or 12 feet. Sombreuil does best during warm, dry summers. She's drought and shade tolerant but hates damp, wet conditions. She has a moderate apple fragrance. Her health is good and she's Hardy zone 6b and higher. She reblooms all summer and autumn long.
A very nostalgic, romantic climber which is at its best on an Obelisk or pillar or arch or fence. Recent research suggests that R. Wichuraiana is one of the parents.
For decades Sombreuil was also called "Colonial White" but the American Rose Society decided in 2006 that the name Colonial white was incorrect and shouldn't be used anymore as a synonym for Sombreuil.
She's a beauty isn't she?
