Hybrid Tea
Radiance was an extremely popular rose between 1911 and 1940. Rose experts say this rose made the Hybrid Teas so popular. Today, Radiance is still widely available and she had many color sports. Radiance and Pink Radiance are the same rose but there's also a red Radiance and a white Radiance although the ordinary (pink) Radiance is far more popular.
Radiance has big globular, marble shaped buds, much like Mme Caroline Testout. They slowly open into typical Tea shaped flowers. The colors are beautiful: Silvery pink and darker pink at the reverse side of the petals and this gives a wonderful effect. She's quite tall with 150 cm or 5 feet as a maximum. The buds are held on long stems. Good healthy foliage with little disease. Then there's her perfume and it's grandiose! Very strong Damask mixed with fruit, very similar to La France. Also a good feature is her reblooming skill: She grows more and more blooms in early September, she loves autumn temperatures. Zone 6b to 9b
We can say that Radiance is in the same league as La France, Lady Mary Fitzwilliam, Madame Segond Weber and Mme Caroline Testout but with a very strong fragrance like La France.
Early Hybrid Teas often have the exquisite blooms of the Teas and the superb fragrance of the Hybrid Perpetuals.
Without Radiance the Hybrid Tea roses wouldn't have become such a big success so in that regard this is a very important historical rose
