Soleil d'Or, Joseph Pernet Ducher, 1900
Early Hybrid Tea /Hybrid Foetida
Mother of nearly all modern Hybrid Tea roses
Soleil d'Or' is a vigorous, upright Foetida hybrid rose, 3 to 5 ft (90–150 cm) in height, with a 3 ft (90 cm) spread. The flowers are large with a flat, cup-shaped form. Flowers are borne singly or in small clusters. Bloom size is 2.4 in (6 cm) on average. 'Soleil d'Or' has a strong, spicy fragrance. The flower color is a blend of orange, yellow, apricot and pink. Orange-yellow outer petals curve inward with a pink-rose interior and a yellow reverse. The rose has strong stems covered in large, thick thorns. She loves hot and dry weather and can rebloom. Joseph Pernet Ducher used Rosa Foetida (Austrian briar rose) to bring more bright colors in roses, especially all shades of yellow, orange, Apricot etc. This revolution in color had two negative side effects: Foetida brought in the susceptibility to Blackspot and less fragrance. Pernet Ducher continued his breeding program and created many new cultivars called "Pernetiana's". Crossings with more Hardy Teas resulted in the Hybrid Teas and the Pernetiana's merged with this new group. Soleil d'or wasn't the only succes from that early breeding program. Madame Caroline Testout and Madame Abel Chatenay were created at that time and became two of the most popular roses of the 19th century.
Soleil d'or is available from many nurseries. A must have for rose lovers which love rose history
