Maréchal Niel, Pradel before 1864
On paper said to be a Noisette but Graham Stewart Thomas says it's a climbing Tea.
A rose of exceptional beauty and regarded as a wonder when yellow roses were very rare. As all Teas Maréchal Niel has exquisite flowers in a beautiful yellow to gold. High centered buds opening to perfect HT Shaped blooms. They have a strong iris, raspberry and Violet fragrance. She reblooms continously and can reach 400 cm.
What's the catch you might think? Yes there's a catch. She's rather tender and can't survive temp lower as -12 Celsius. She definitely needs a warm sheltered wall or best a serre or greenhouse. She's ideal for Mediterranean climates with very mild winters. In these climates she almost blooms continously.
Of course you can protect her against severe frost by wrapping her in protective fabric but it's a rather risky business. With climate change in full force now it is to expect that this rose can be grown without problems in France, Belgium, Holland and the UK within a decade.
For those who feel sad they can't grow her there's good news. She has a daughter with the same stunning flowers but in white/lemon green shading. It's the magnificent Paul's Lemon pillar. Yes, she's a daughter and can take - 15 Celsius easily. Both Maréchal Niel and Paul's Lemon pillar were planted in fall 2022 in my hot enclosed garden. Also Diamond jubilee got a spot in the garden because she's also a child of Maréchal Niel.
