Constance Spry

Constance Spry, Austin 1961

English rose

Parents:

Dainty maiden X Belle Isis

The very first English rose and still unsurpassed after all those years. Constance Spry has become a classic and deservedly so. It's a once blooming climber but please don't let this put you off. She's worth every cm you give her.
It's a big shrub or better climber for a wall, trellis, arch, pergola or an Obelisk.
She can reach 300X200 cm or 11X9 feet
The first year she'll make lots of vegetation and that's good. Try to train it as horizontal as possible from the beginning. DON'T PRUNE. The second year she will bloom on that vegetation from last year. After this flush she will start growing again and we let her do that. Again keep training her horizontally or in a peacock tail shape. The more horizontally you train her the more flowers you'll get next year. After three or four years she will be smuthered with gigantic pale pink puffy blooms. They are huge and spreading a strong fresh myhhrr fragrance. She can bloom for at least three weeks or more. It's a yearly spectacle you don't want to miss. Only start pruning after four years if it's necessary and remember: Always prune a once flowering rose immediately AFTER flowering so NEVER IN SPRING.
Constance is very healthy. She has many little thorns and she inherited them from the old rose Belle Isis from Parmentier so yes the first English rose had Belgian ancestry.
Constance Spry was named after the famous florist and she would be so proud if she saw what kind of rose was named after her.
One of the very best garden roses ever!
Highly recommended!
