Papa Meilland climbing

Papa Meilland climbing, 1970

Climbing sport of Papa Meilland

Climbing Hybrid Tea

Papa Meilland was one of the most popular roses in the second half of the 20th century. With its perfect HT shaped flowers, the stunning deep red color and a pervasive delicious Damask fragrance it was the nr 1 rose for so many. But Papa was susceptible to Blackspot, as so many of the red modern roses and Hybrid Teas in general. Still, many want Papa in their garden today as it certainly doesn't always gets blackspot and it's pros outweigh the cons.
As with all Hybrid Teas it wouldn't take long before a climbing sport was discovered and it occurred in 1970 in Australia. The climbing sport can reach 350 cm or 11 feet and flushes throughout the season. Don't expect hundreds of blooms opening at once, Hybrid Tea climbers have less flowers but they are bigger with much more fragrance. With climbing Hybrid teas it's the quality of the blooms that counts. So Papa climbing will get flushes freely but not abundant. The blooms are identical to the bush form so beautiful dark red and a heavenly fragrance. She's less susceptible to Blackspot than her parent plant. She loves full sun and has zone 6b to 9b.
Very good as cut flower.

Sénégal

Sénégal, Mallerin before 1944

Climbing HT, Climbing Pernetiana

The very best darkest Red HT climber. It surpasses Guinée because Guinée isn't that Hardy and has a serious problem regarding drying in. The branches just die in the middle of the stems.

Sénégal doesn't have those issues. It's a glorious climber with double blooms in the most magnificent dark red color. A strong fragrance makes it all complete. Very vigorous growth with rather thin stems going everywhere. She can reach five meters or 18 feet. Zone 6b to 9b. Try to plant her with some afternoon shade as the flowers may burn from the hot sun ☀
Flushes freely throughout the season.
Highly recommended rose

Meg

"Meg", Gosset 1954

Climbing Hybrid Tea

Paul's Lemon Pillar X Madama Butterfly.

Apricot or apricot blend.  Strong fragrance.  Large, single to semi-double bloom form.  Repeats later in the season.

Height: 245 to 395cm
USDA zone 4b through 10b.

Dirk's opinion:

A classic. Single or double Hybrid teas have this almost mythical status and Meg is no exception. With these parents you know this is a very fragrant rose and the color is exquisite.
Grow her against the façade of your home and spread her horizontally. She'll be a stunner.

Annapurna

Annapurna, Dorieux II, 2000

Hybrid Tea

Resistant to Blackspot? No
Resistant to mildew? Yes
Resistant to rain? Yes
Resistant to heat? Yes

Together with Pope JPII the very best white Hybrid tea. Both have pros and cons. JPII has larger flowers and an even stronger fragrance but Annapurna is rain and heat tolerant but susceptible to Blackspot.
They are both stunning!

Modern Climber

Rose of the year 2019 in the UK

A stunning eco climber. Clusters of medium double white blooms with pronounced pink stamen. 300 cm or 9 feet. Incredible speed of reblooming. I got mine last year end of June and in September she had rebloomed three times. Very healthy glossy foliage. Light fragrance. She attracts lot of pollinators. Zone 6b to 9b. I kept her all summer long in the small pot she was in, heatwave after heatwave and she kept going. Trust me, this is a good rose!

Gret's joy

Gret's joy, Ann Boudolf for Lens roses 2015

Modern Climber

Magnificent light orange aging to light apricot very full, quartered blooms. Very strong Tea fragrance. Flushes freely throughout the season. Height up to 350 cm or 10 ft. Zone 6b to 9b. Very healthy.
A rose that needs much more attention. Gret's joy and Colette need much more attention! Don't forget dear readers that popular ramblers not always are the best. A lot is marketing. Remember that!

Colette

Colette, Meilland 1998

Modern climber

Flowers: old fashioned, many petaled apricot/peach /pink in clusters
Growth: 150/250 or more, very vigorous
Fragrance: Strong Tea /Damask
Reblooming? Yes
Resistant to Blackspot? Yes
Resistant to mildew? Yes
Resistant to rain? Yes
Resistant to heat? Yes
USDA zone 4b and warmer
Shade tolerant? No
Use: Pergola, Arbor, obelisk, fences, border, cut flower

A truly magnificent rose. She has this really nostalgic old rose feel about her. Although it's not a David Austin rose she looks identical to Evelyn but with a little bit smaller blooms.
One of the parents was the yellow Friesia and this gave her vigour and this lovely smell. Forget the current Austin roses being sold as climbers, take Colette instead. Never sick, rain and heat tolerant. Highly recommended variety!
