Rosa Wichuraiana

Rosa Wichuraiana
Memorial rose
R. Wichurana
R. Luciae

Wild rose

Named after the German botanist Max - Ernst Wichura Latin suffix "iana"

A tall growing rose up to 700 cm or 21 feet. Glossy, rather dark green foliage. Blooms are white, single and show their stamen. They stand in small clusters. Sets hips in Autumn. Apple fragrance

Rosa Wichuraiana was and is still used to create the so called Wichuraiana Climbers or ramblers. Especially French breeder Barbier used Wichuraiana in his crossing. Famous roses with Wichuraiana as a parent are Dr. W Van Fleet, New Dawn, Albertine, François Juranville, Paul Noël, Paul Transon, Alberic Barbier etc...
Yes New Dawn is a Wichuraiana climber so all descendants from New Dawn are in fact Wichuraiana hybrids and they are many! So as you can see Rosa Wichuraiana has been very important in the development of new modern roses.
As a wild species she can be used to cover things or as a ground cover, for cemeteries etc...
