Hybrid Perpetual
Lots of confusion regarding this rose. There seem to be two other roses being sold as Souvenir d'Alphonse Lavallée. One is Erinnerung an Brod from Geschwind and the other one is Souvenir du Docteur Jamain. When I bought mine I got Erinnerung an Brod which is a totally different rose. Yes she's red to purple but with Gallica style blooms and it's a climber.
Souvenir d'alphonse lavallée is said to be almost identical to Souvenir du docteur jamain so maybe, indeed, this rose has been lost and the one sold today is Souvenir du docteur jamain.
Anyhow, Souvenir d'alphonse lavallée is or was dark red, fading to purple, very double globular blooms in small clusters or solitary. Very tall, vigorous growth up to 250 cm or 12 feet so it's definitely recommended to grow it as a climber or on a trellis, obelisk, fence, etc. Very strong fragrance. Flushes freely throughout the season. Zone 6b to 9b and quite healthy. So as you can read that's also the description of Souvenir du Docteur Jamain. But in the end? Does it matter? Enjoy the rose you get!
