Paul's lemon pillar, Paul 1914
Climbing Hybrid Tea
A rose that deserves so much more attention. So many good roses are almost unknown and so many mediocre and bad roses are popular. It only shows that good marketing can even get shit to sell.
Back to Paul's lemon pillar: High centered buds open into perfect, giant exquisite hybrid tea blooms in the very best sense of the word. It's an early Hybrid tea so she reminds us of climbing teas and HT climbers as Mme Caroline Testout. The open blooms don't fall open flat but keep their shaggy form. Beautiful!
She is a child of Marรฉchal Niel, the most beautiful rose ever created.
The color is very unusual: artic white with a lemon green shading in the center. And then there's the fragrance: According to my friends at nurseries this rose has one of the strongest fragrances, it's pure lemon ๐ very refreshing. So the name is spot on!
This is a very vigorous rose and after planting she immediately starts to grow in the best climbing HT way. She's perfect for old bric walls or a pergola. She can reach 600 cm, yes 6 meters or 19 feet! Her strong canes need to be trained horizontally. The summer flush is overwhelming, she's covered in giant blooms. As many climbing HT roses she later produces a few flowers. But her main flush is five weeks long.
She can tolerate semi shade and is rain resistant. She has large deep green foliage which is very healthy especially for such an old HT.

Dirk's opinion:
Perfect! That's the word to describe this rose. Giant perfectly formed HT flowers which exude a pervasive strong citrus fragrance. For walls climbing HT are the best and this Paul's lemon pillar won't disappoint. A queen of rose perfection. Highly recommended variety!
